Joseph Kuo

CEO and Managing Partner

Joseph Kuo is CEO and Managing Partner of Haven Tower Group, where he has strategic oversight for the firm and all its client relationships. Mr. Kuo has over 20 years of corporate and financial public relations experience, encompassing both proactive visibility programs as well as communications support for transactional and special situations.

Before leading Haven Tower, he served as Senior Vice President and Head of Public Relations at LPL Financial (NASDAQ: LPLA), the largest independent retail broker-dealer in the nation by revenues, where he had oversight of the company's public relations strategy and execution, while serving as its principal media spokesperson. In this role, he led the PR function of LPL Financial through its multi-billion-dollar initial public offering on the NASDAQ Stock Market in November 2010.

Prior to that, Mr. Kuo was a Partner at Kekst and Co., a leading New York City-based public relations firm, where he worked for approximately 10 years. While at Kekst, he developed and implemented strategic communications programs across a range of sectors, with a focus on the retail financial advice and specialty asset-management spaces.

In the past, Mr. Kuo has served on the PR Committee of the Insured Retirement Institute, the advocacy and trade association for the variable annuity industry. He has also served multiple times as a PR panelist for OneVoice, the annual national independent broker-dealer conference of the Financial Services Institute (FSI), the leading industry association for independent broker-dealers and independent financial advisors.

Mr. Kuo earned a Bachelor of Arts, summa cum laude and phi beta kappa, in History and East Asian Studies from Yale University, as well as a Professional Certificate in Finance from the New York Institute of Finance.

He joined Haven Tower in 2012 after spending five years in the financial services industry working for Bank of America, JPMorgan Chase and Chase Investment Service Corp. Prior to that, Mr. Dugan was a reporter for The East Valley Tribune in Mesa, Arizona.

Mr. Dugan attended Arizona State University, earning Bachelor of Arts degrees in both political science and journalism (Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communications).

With a professional career that spans 18 years, Mr. Clemens developed an extensive understanding of the financial services industry over the course of his prior eight-year role as an investment banker and corporate mergers-and-acquisitions professional. He also worked as a business journalist in the Denver area, writing on a wide range of industries, including financial services, technology and healthcare.

Mr. Clemens served as Manager for Corporate Development at Level 3 Communications in Colorado, where he managed the company's sale of its advertising distribution business to DG FastChannel for $130 million. He also provided strategic analysis and recommendations to the company's senior management team on competitors and possible acquisition targets.

Prior to his time at Level 3, Mr. Clemens was an investment banker in the Media and Technology Group of BMO Capital Markets in New York, where he worked on a broad array of lead-managed and co-managed IPOs, private placements and mergers and acquisitions, among other assignments.

Mr. Clemens earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Yale University.

Ms. Caris brings nearly 20 years of experience in strategic communications and journalism. Previously, Ms. Caris was the Director of Public Relations at San Diego-based Bridgepoint Education (NYSE: BPI), managing the public relations, community relations and employee communications for the company and its three national locations.

Ms. Caris also previously served as a Vice President at Sloane & Company in New York, an award-winning public relations and investor relations firm, specializing in financial services. While there she led PR strategy and a team for large, multinational accounts.

Before her career as a public relations executive, Ms. Caris was a financial journalist and television reporter. She was a producer and on-air reporter at Bloomberg Television in New York, covering Wall Street and the global stock, bond and currency markets. Prior to Bloomberg, she was a television writer and producer at CNN in New York, focused solely on the station's international business news.

Ms. Caris earned her Bachelor of Science in Broadcast Journalism from Boston University's College of Communications.

With over 12 years of experience in public relations and communications, Mr. Manning has extensive experience as both an in-house and agency executive in successfully developing and implementing full-circle marketing, social media and PR campaigns.

Before joining Haven Tower, Mr. Manning served in a range of marketing and media relations managerial roles for seven years at Pentair (NYSE: PNR), a multi-billion-dollar global industrial manufacturing and consumer products company focused on aquatics and urban farming.

Most recently, Mr. Manning served as a PR & Media Strategist for Pentair at its Florida corporate offices, with oversight of print and digital advertising, social media management, public relations campaigns and execution of large-scale international events.

Before joining Pentair, Mr. Manning served as an Assistant Associate for Warschawski, a Baltimore, Maryland-based marketing, PR and advertising agency.

Earlier in his tenure at NerdWallet, he worked as a writer, focusing on creating and optimizing content related to small-business and consumer credit and debt.

Mr. Wang previously worked in the corporate communications department of Health Care Service Corp., where he shaped the company's messaging strategy around the Affordable Care Act and created thought leadership content for senior executives, including the chief medical officer and the CEO.

For most of his career, Mr. Wang worked as a newspaper reporter at the Los Angeles Times, the Chicago Tribune and Crain's Chicago Business. Over the course of a decade he covered urban affairs, breaking news, criminal justice and the healthcare industry.

Mr. Wang earned a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Duke University, a Master of Science in Journalism from Northwestern University and an MBA from Northwestern's Kellogg School of Management.

She is working on her first book, North Korea's Nuclear Cinema, with I.B. Tauris in London, an imprint of Bloomsbury. She has also reported for the Associated Press and has contributed columns to the South China Morning Post in Hong Kong.

Prior to joining UPI, Ms. Shim worked at the natural gas trading desks of Enron Corp., in Houston, where she helped to develop an in-house fundamental analysis group covering a wide range of energy commodities, including coal and natural gas. In Seoul, South Korea, she worked on tracking deal flow for private equity firm Colony Capital Asia Pacific.

Ms. Shim earned a Bachelor of Arts in economics and philosophy from Wellesley College and a Master’s degree in global journalism and East Asian studies from New York University.

Katherine Paulson

Her work encompasses comprehensive marketing planning and execution, including brand launches and rebranding programs, development of brand guidelines, email prospecting campaigns, as well as CRM selection and implementation. She supports companies across the wealth management and asset management industries.

Among other engagements, Ms. Paulson currently serves as the outsourced Chief Marketing Officer of CR Capital Group, a financial services firm that partners with business sponsors to raise capital through the development of distribution platforms that partner closely with wealth management firms across a wide array of business models and sizes. In this role, she is responsible for shaping CR Capital Group's brand and marketing strategy including digital, research and insights functions at the firm.

Previously, Ms. Paulson was Assistant Vice President and Director of Marketing Communications at MetLife for 11 years where she led the creative and digital marketing teams for the U.S. Retail Annuities business. During her tenure, Ms. Paulson helped grow the company's variable annuity sales from $6 billion to $28 billion. Ms. Paulson was also the Director of Marketing Communications at Altegris where she led the marketing team for the wirehouse, independent and private client channels.

Earlier in her career, she worked for eight years at Jackson National Life Distributors, Inc. as Director of Product Development where she helped launch and develop the company's flagship variable annuity product suite.

Ms. Paulson received a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of California, Los Angeles. She holds her FINRA 6 and 26 licenses.

Prior to that, he was a broadcast writer and editor for Fox News Media with a focus on breaking news and political coverage. Mr. Arenzon also worked at the New York Daily News, where he served as homepage editor, copy editor and digital reporter.

Before his career in journalism, Mr. Arenzon was a copywriter and editor for global advertising agency McCann Erickson. There, he oversaw creative copy for clients in a variety of industries, ranging from cosmetics and pharmaceuticals to financial services and hospitality. He also developed Spanish language copy for international ads.

In 2009, Mr. Arenzon founded Ink Tactics, an advertising agency, which specialized in content strategy and consulting services for both English and Spanish language markets.

Mr. Arenzon earned a double Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Creative Journalism as well as a Master of Arts in Strategic Communications from Baruch College.

Donald Cutler

Prior to joining M&M Investments, Mr. Clapp served as a bookkeeper and administrative support professional for the Robert Half & Company, a national staffing agency focused on providing bookkeeping, accounting and administrative temps for small to mid-sized businesses.

Mr. Clapp holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Economics from the University of Washington, and hails originally from Seattle.

He is also a member of the Board of Directors of Oppenheimer & Co., Inc., as well as the Board of Directors of Clark Capital Management Group. Previously, Mr. Roth served as CEO of AIG Advisor Group as well as CEO of Cetera Financial Group, two of the largest networks of independent financial advisors in the country.

With three decades of experience in the wealth management industry, Mr. Roth supports Haven Tower by aligning the firm's leadership team with the expertise and relationships he has built over time as a CEO of some of the largest firms in the financial services space, past and current Board member for leading wealth management-related companies, investment banker and entrepreneur.

Mary Osako

Mary Osako is Vice Chair of the Board of Advisors for Haven Tower Group, where she provides strategic counsel and growth planning guidance to the firm's leadership. She serves as Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In this role, she reports directly to UCLA's Chancellor, and oversees communications, public relations, marketing, branding, events and outreach for the nation's top-ranked public university.

Mary Osako is Vice Chair of the Board of Advisors for Haven Tower Group, where she provides strategic counsel and growth planning guidance to the firm's leadership. She serves as Vice Chancellor for Strategic Communications at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). In this role, she reports directly to UCLA's Chancellor, and oversees communications, public relations, marketing, branding, events and outreach for the nation's top-ranked public university.

Before her appointment to Vice Chancellor of UCLA, Ms. Osako served as Partner and COO at Haven Tower Group, where she helped set the firm's growth strategy and launched its HTTC (Haven Tower Tech & Consumer) practice, which aligns Haven Tower's leading-edge capabilities in PR strategy and execution with a highly select group of corporate clients in the technology, media, venture capital and consumer spaces.

She brings 20 years of experience in supporting some of the world's most widely recognized and respected global brands in the technology, media and entertainment sectors, with significant expertise in ongoing communications and crisis management.

Prior to joining Haven Tower, Ms. Osako served as Chief Communications Officer at Activision Blizzard (NASDAQ: ATVI), reporting directly to the company's Chief Executive Officer and Founder Bobby Kotick. In this role, she had oversight for all aspects of external and internal communications ranging from corporate positioning and community relations to executive and financial communications. During her tenure, Activision Blizzard was recognized for the first time as one of Fortune's 100 Best Places to Work For, as well as part of The Future 50.

Before joining Activision Blizzard, Ms. Osako led global corporate communications at Amazon (NASDAQ: AMZN) for half a decade, where she spearheaded initiatives encompassing corporate reputation management, employee communications and events, crisis communications, community relations, executive communications and the launch of Amazon's drone delivery strategy. She was Amazon's chief spokesperson on a broad range of matters including sales tax legislation and working conditions.

Previously, Ms. Osako served as Chief Communications Officer at Ask.com (formerly Ask Jeeves), a subsidiary within IAC / InterActive Corp (NASDAQ: IAC). In this position, Ms. Osako reported directly to the company's CEO, and led all aspects of communications including social media, community relations, employee, product, consumer and corporate public relations. She also led the company's brand strategy and execution with respect to the company's partnership with NASCAR during her tenure.

Before joining Ask.com / IAC, Ms. Osako served as Vice President of International and Global Public Policy communications at Yahoo!, where she led the company's international PR function, managing strategic communications and media relations across a broad spectrum of complex reputation management issues.

Earlier in her career, Ms. Osako held PR roles at Sprint, where she helped launch the company's entry into mobile web services, as well as Novak Communications, a Los Angeles-based boutique PR agency where her clients included the Walt Disney Company and the Los Angeles Music Center.

Ms. Osako, who holds a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from UCLA, has been recognized multiple times on The Holmes Report's Influencer 100, an annual compilation of the 100 most influential communications executives around the world.

Creativity and Aggressive Tactics Drive Success for a Challenger. Jim Nagengast, CEO of Securities America, a national full service independent broker-dealer and RIA firm, decided to challenge FINRA's nominee for the organization's Large Firm Board Seat as a dissident candidate in its Board elections (2018).

Background: Mr. Nagengast faced a number of significant challenges initially, including the FINRA leadership team's publicly professed preference for his opponent in the elections across the media and in key election materials disseminated by the organization.

Solution: Haven Tower moved quickly to identify all of the major inflection points in the FINRA Board elections. The firm developed messages, media outreach and communications tactics around each inflection point under a broader strategy characterized by the following:

  • Haven Tower's senior professionals decided to break away from "traditional" FINRA election communications campaign procedures.
  • Instead, drawing on their deep experience in supporting unsolicited tender offers and change-of-control / hostile M&A contests, Haven Tower's senior professionals decided to approach Mr. Nagengast's election campaign in the same way as a proxy fight.
  • Accordingly, Haven Tower captured each public disclosure point in the election as an opportunity to aggressively spotlight Mr. Nagengast's strengths as a candidate across a wide spectrum of communications vehicles, media outlets and social media, while challenging his opponent's qualifications and positioning as a candidate.
  • Additionally, Haven Tower helped to identify and mobilize a wide array of influential third party experts and associations within the retail financial advice space to speak out publicly in support of Jim Nagengast's candidacy, utilizing Haven Tower-prepared messages and communications plans.

By the end of the FINRA Board elections in the summer of 2018, Jim Nagengast won the contest for the organization's Large Firm Seat on its Board.

Development of a comprehensive media thought leadership campaign across national, local and industry press outlets geared at mobilizing muliple constituencies with a clear interest in influencing the final form of the DOL fiduciary rules.

Financial Services Institute (FSI): Sound Judgment and Expertise in Developing High-Impact Media Thought Leadership Campaigns

Background: The Financial Services Institute (FSI), the nation's leading advocacy organization for independent broker-dealers and independent financial advisors, needed to energize its members while engaging the widest possible field of public allies to influence the final version of the US Department of Labor's proposed fiduciary rule for retirement plan financial advice. In its initial draft form, the proposed rule would have dramatically curtailed the ability of American retail investors to access affordable, professional advice on their retirement plan assets.

Solution: Haven Tower partnered closely with FSI's leadership team to develop and roll out a comprehensive media thought leadership campaign across national, local and industry press outlets. The campaign was geared at mobilizing multiple constituencies with a clear interest in influencing the final form of the Department of Labor (DOL) fiduciary rule to enable the continued delivery of affordable professional financial guidance for retirement plans.

In particular, Haven Tower supported FSI's efforts in the following key ways:

  • Developing core messages together with "modular," audience-specific messages that could be deployed on a seamless and flexible basis across a wide range of situations and by a broad array of spokespersons among FSI's member firms and financial advisors.
  • Creating, pitching and placing op-eds and by-lined articles signed by top FSI leaders across multiple press outlets each month, as part of a larger editorial calendar strategy designed to reinforce key advocacy themes.
  • Integrating all media thought leadership efforts with FSI's social media presence as well as Haven Tower's ongoing content creation efforts in developing each quarter's issue of FSI Voice, the official member newsletter of FSI, reaching over 3,000 executives at 105 broker-dealer firms and over 38,000 independent financial advisors.

When the final fiduciary rule was released, it was clear that the DOL had attempted to address many of the operational features of the rule, due to the advocacy efforts of FSI. However, FSI and other like-minded trade organizations were compelled to litigate the rule, as it continues to threaten the industry and hard-working Americans’ dream of a dignified retirement.

Haven Tower continues to provide robust media relations strategy and execution support for FSI, as the organization continues to combat within the legal arena the most deleterious aspects of the final DOL fiduciary rule.
